Research Interests
I am a Professor at the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER), University of Essex. I am a quantitative social scientist with expertise in panel/longitudinal data. I conduct empirical research primarily in the areas of ethnicity, specifically investigating ethnic differences in subjective wellbeing (e.g., life satisfaction, mental health) as well as economic wellbeing (e.g., income, wages). I am also interested in the causes and consequences of harassment and discrimination, formation, measurement and impact of identity on life outcomes and, measurement of institutional characteristics in developing countries and exploring their effects.
I am the Associate Director (Outreach) and co-Investigator for Understanding Society: the UK Household Longitudinal Study and oversee the study’s User Support and Training activities, and lead its programme of work on Ethnicity.
